During the 22 years preceding independence, the whole island of Spanish was under the rule of Haiti, as a result of the occupation of this country of Haiti Spanish state emerged briefly in 1822 in the eastern part of the island.
After the efforts of Dominican patriots to wean the country from Haitian rule, several military actions that occurred between 1844 and 1856 ended up consolidating the republic as a new state. Haitians tried several times to re-master the newly created republic with failed results until 1867 Haiti recognized the Dominican independence.
